It's hard to know who this film is supposed to be for -- beyond Mr. Oedekerk's fraternity brothers. An obvious guess would be fans of the Hong Kong action films that serve as the source and inspiration of "Kung Pow." But anyone who has watched even a few of those films is going to know that those had a lot more genuinely clever wit and actually funny slapstick in them than does this spoof. ...

Post "Crouching Tiger" America is a good place to mock the arch conventions of martial-arts movies. But "Kung Pow" is no "Call Me Bruce" or "Kentucky Fried Movie." The best spoofs are always written by committee, and Oedekerk needed some help gagging this thing up. Oh well. Maybe for the sequel. ...
