News: For his latest role, Matt Damon tries to become a new kind of action hero
Video: Matt Damon discusses "The Bourne Identity"

Sacramento Bee Movie Critic
The entertaining new film version of Robert Ludlum's 1980 spy thriller, "The Bourne Identity," adds a crisp, tangy autumnal feel to the hot dog days of summer moviegoing. It's an intelligent and very sophisticated work and yet also an extremely youthful one. ...

"The Bourne Identity" is a skillful action movie about a plot that exists only to support a skillful action movie. The entire story is a set-up for the martial arts and chases. Because they are done well, because the movie is well-crafted and acted, we give it a pass. Too bad it's not about something. ...

What makes "The Bourne Identity" so compelling is the way Damon conveys the depths of Bourne's disorientation and his helplessness, despite those impressive physical powers (Damon learned the Filipino martial art discipline Kali for the role, and it's so startlingly fast and efficient that one quickly accepts the concept of this smallish actor as a fighting machine). ...

As directed by Doug Liman ("Swingers") and scripted by Tony Gilroy and William Blake Herron, "Bourne" fairly barrels along, like a shiny bullet train blasting through the French countryside. Overview:
The story opens as an amnesiac (Matt Damon) is rescued at sea by the crew of an Italian fishing boat. Nearly dead, he carries only the bullets in his back and the bank account number implanted in his hip. Although completely without identity or background, he does possess an array of extraordinary talents in fighting, linguistics and self-defense that speak of a dangerous past. He sets out on a desperate search -- assisted by the initially rebellious Marie (Franka Potente) -- to discover who he really is, and why so many people want him dead.
